Dermaroller FAQ

A Skin Rejuvenation Breakthrough: Dermaroller

The Scientia Derma Roller (Dermaroller) is a hand-held gadget which can naturally stimulate elastin and collagen production in the top layers of the skin without causing any damage. A Dermaroller can be used by men or women and has several beneficial effects:

QUESTION? What do wrinkles, scars, stretch marks and uneven skin have in common?

ANSWER: Insufficient collagen! If your skin could create more collagen then you wouldn’t get them. Using a Dermaroller gives mothernature a helping hand by encouraging collagen production in your skin, which can help prevent / reverse their formation.

Even the famous faces of Hollywood are using cosmetic microneedle therapy to give them a smooth and youthful glow. Perhaps the most high profile celebrities said to have undergone Dermaroller therapy are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

What is the Scientia Derma Roller / Micro Needle Roller?

The Scientia Derma Roller (or Micro Needle Roller) has the features of a precision engineered medical instrument, but with the simplicity necessary to use this in the comfort of your home. It is based on a simple hand-held roller which has 192 surgical steel microneedles which are able to open the pores of the uppermost layer of your skin without damaging it. The pores close again approximately an hour later, but during that time, your skin is much better able to absorb and benefit from skin creams and lotions.

The photo displayed below shows a magnified image of the Dermaroller. The needles are just one millimetre long so it gives you a tickling feeling when the Scientia Derma Roller is used.

Micro-needling of the skin is becoming an increasingly popular cosmetic process, but the Scientia Derma Roller is an FDA approved application which is simple enough that you can carry it out at home. As a matter of fact, it has very similar results to Chemical Peels, Laser Therapy, and Dermabrasion, but it is a whole lot less invasive and is only a fraction of the cost.

How does the Dermaroller Give You Better Skin?

As you roll the Dermaroller over your skin, it creates pin point punctures into the dermis – the majority of which are just temporarily opening your pores. This is perceived by the skin as damage, which causes the release of growth factors that stimulate the production of elastin and collagen. Your skin is designed to react to any injury by initiating the process of healing, but in general it will just repair as far as it must to keep you healthy – which is very different to healing to a cosmetic level. By routinely initiating this healing process, you ask your skin to keep regenerating until the process is completed.

Your skin normally assumes that stretch marks, scars and wrinkles are OK, but with a gentle daily reminder brought about by the Dermaroller your skin is reminded to continue the repair process until your body has also healed itself on a cosmetic level. This process of skin remodelling can keep working for literally months beyond each Skin Roller session, but visible changes can be seen within 7 - 10 days! Your skin naturally regenerates itself every forty days, so with a little bit of effort, the changes can be dramatic and fast.

Cosmetic micro needling with a Dermaroller can be carried out safely on all types of skin and all skin colours. Other treatments often have to avoid sensitive areas – like around the eyes, the neck and the backs of the hands, but with a lower needle length a Scientia Derma Roller can be used on any of these areas. The epidermis and melanocytes in the basal area of the skin are not damaged, so there’s no possibility of post inflammatory hyper pigmentation.

How do you use a Scientia Derma Roller?

The Scientia Derma Roller process is very straight forward and can be carried out in your own home. Check out our Dermaroller Instructions page for more details.

So how fast does the Scientia Derma Roller give results?

Naturally, the rate you will see noticeable results depends upon what you are trying to treat along with how dramatically your skin has to remodel the affected area. This cycle of skin remodelling often continues for many weeks after each Dermaroller session, but noticeable improvements can be seen within around 7 days! Your skin naturally renews itself every forty days, so with a little stimulation changes can be hugely rewarding.

Does the skin rolling process hurt? or can it make you bleed?

There are two methods of Derma Rolling. The first version requires the application of cream to numb the area, which enables more vigorous use of the Dermaroller once each week. The second alternative, requires using the device with slight force up to as much as 5 times each week. Using the device gently gives you a tickling feeling and is not painful – but your facial area is more sensitive to it than your body.

Neither method should make you bleed. You could experience a brief reddening of your skin for around an hour after each session and it may give a feeling similar to mild sunburn. We recommend the application of sunscreen / block after microneedling. Take a look at our Derma Roller Instructions page for more information.

Can a Scientia Derma Roller reduce stretch marks?

Stretchmark removal is only one of the many benefits associated with using a Scientia Derma Roller. Stretch marks occur when your skin is forced to stretch stretched rapidly. The outer layer of skin isn’t affected, but the dermis underneath becomes thinner and develops small tears. The capillaries that lie under the surface of the skin show through, which can give the marks a reddish colour. Later, when the blood vessels constrict, the purplish colour can fade to a paler skin tone.

The most common triggers for stretch marks are pregnancy (around 75 to 90% of ladies develop stretch marks at some point during pregnancy), growth spurts in teenagers, quick muscle growth in weight lifters and weightloss or gain in body weight.

The process of reducing stretch marks or the reduction of stretch marks happens as the Scientia Derma Roller stimulates the production of new collagen fibres and elastin in the skin. The stretch marks gradually fill in, the skin grows thicker, becomes tighter and elasticity is restored. The rate at which stretch marks removal can be achieved is dependent upon the severity of the marks, but visible changes can be seen in as little as a week with dramatic results in a month or less.

Please check out our Dermaroller Diary page which shows genuine images of the amazing results that can be achieved when using a Derma Roller to treat stretch marks.

No. Not all skin rollers are the same. Some rollers do not have FDA listing that the Scientia Dermaroller does. Other cheap rollers are often for one use only and are not made to the same specification of surgical steel (as a result, they can blunt or break), and most concerning is whether or not they are gamma sterilized. The Scientia Dermaroller is made to the highest specification so that it can be reused intensively for 12 to 24 weeks. It is manufactured / quality controlled in accordance with ISO/CE/FDA standards and gamma sterilised according to ISO 11137.
